Hoshiarpur, Oct 13 (UNI) To promote the ancient Indian Ayurvedic system of holistic healthcare, a Punjab Ayurvedic University (PAU) will be set up in the district, Minister for Medical Education and Research, Tikshan Sud said here today.
While addressing a press conference, Mr Sud said the draft of Punjab Ayurvedic University Act, 2007 to be set up at village Kharkan, 12 Km from here on Hoshiarpur-Unaroad, had already been prepared. It would be placed in the coming assembly session after getting the necessary approval from Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, he added.
Gram Panchayat Kharkan has already decided, in principle, to transfer 15 acre land for setting up the PAU. The management of a private Ayurvedic college of the village has also agreed in principle to give 5 acres of its land including 8000 square-foot constructed area free of cost.
Punjab Planning Commission will provide Rs 5 crore on the initial stage whereas similar amount will be provided by the State government. Former Director of Ayurveda, Yoga&Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, Union Ministry of Health, S. K. Mishra has been appointed as Chairman of the advisory committee for setting up the proposed university, Mr Sud said.
In addition, Forest Department planned to prepare a booklet containing complete information of medicinal plants and herbs including their medicinal utility and plantation while the Medicinal Plant Board would set up herbal park in urban areas.
The Forest Department would also plant medicinal and herbal plants in its land instead of fast growing trees and set up divisional level herbal parks throughout the state .
Training for plantation of herbal and medicinal plants to youths would also be imparted in the Forest Research and Training Institute, Hoshiarpur and farmers would be encouraged to diversify into planting herbs and medicinal plants to earn more profit, he added.
