Chandigarh, Oct 13 (UNI) The Government agencies and private millers procured more than 48.7 lakh tonnes of paddy till yesterday.
According to an official spokesman, out of the total procurement the government agencies had procured 36.26 lakh tonnes, which was 74.4 per cent of the total purchase. The millers had lifted the remainng 12.47 lakh tonnes.
Ferozepur district with 9.32 lakh tonnes was leading in paddy procurement in the state, followed by Ludhiana with 4.69 lakh tonnes.
The farmers of Punjab had been paid Rs 1,631.22 crore for the paddy procured by government agencies up to October 11. A sum of Rs 2130.13 crore had already been allocated to the District Food Controllers to ensure timely payment to the farmers.
To ensure smooth procurement and timely payments to the farmers for the Kharif Season, the Punjab Government has already got a cash credit limit of Rs 7,439 crore sanctioned from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for October.
The government had already issued instructions to all agencies to release payments to the farmers within 72 hours of lifting paddy.
