Hyderabad, Oct 12 (UNI) Away from battle fields and the line of fire, defence personnel from around the globe will vie for honours in the eight-day Fourth World Military Games, beginning here on October 14.
President and Supreme Commander of Armed Forces Pratibha Patil would inaugurate the mega sports event, being held a year ahead of the Olympic Games, to promote sports for peace among the comity of nations.
Over 6,000 participants from as many as 100 member-countries and four observer countries would take part in this edition of the Games held for the first time in Asia, Conseil International du Sports Militaire President Brig Gen Gianni Gola told newspersons here today.
China and Germany would field a contingent of more than 200 athletes followed by 12 countries, including India, with contingent of between 100 and 200 athletes in the largest ever World Military Games, he said.
Brazil would hold the next edition of the Games in 2011 and South Africa in 2015, he added.
Afghanistan would field a special contingent of 32 athletes, he said.
