Varanasi, Oct 12 (UNI) Mafia don Abu Salem was brought from Mumbai to Varanasi early today under heavy police presence and immediately taken to the neighbouring Azamgarh district for attending the funeral of his mother.
The don, presently lodged in the Mumbai jail for involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, travelled in the general compartment of the Mumbai-Varanasi Mahanagri Express under heavy police custody.
Salem arrived at the Varanasi Cantonment railway station at 0700 hrs and was taken in a vehicle by the Mumbai police and the Varanasi district police.
Police sources said Salem will be taken to Azamgarh district jail from where he will move to his native village Saraimeer.
A large number of people had gathered to catch a glimpse of the mafia don.
Policemen did not allow mediapersons to come close to Salem and he was taken out from another side of the railway station.
Salem would be at Pathan Tola locality in his native village Saraimeer after 20 long years to perform the last rites of his mother this evening.
He would be brought to Azamgarh through road. Police and PAC in strength would be deployed on these routes.
Janutun Nisha, Salem's mother, died in Mumbai on Tuesday, following a prolonged illness. She was 75.
The family had moved the special court in Mumbai to seek parole for Salem to attend the last rites of his mother.
The don would attend the funeral in the evening and bury his mother's mortal remains at Supurd-e-khak park. He would later be taken to Mumbai under tight security.
