Lucknow, Oct 12 (UNI) Hundreds of police constables sacked recently by the Mayawati government following allegations of irregularities in their recruitment, today held a demonstration outside the Vidhan Bhawan.
Demanding their immediate reinstatement, the sacked constables raised slogans. But as soon as they began the demonstration, riot policemen dispersed them from the spot. Some of the agitationists were later bundled into police vehicles.
About 22,000 fresh recruitments were made in various wings of the state police during the three-and-half-year long previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government.
Following a probe committee recommendation last month, about 17,000 fresh recruits were sacked and 25 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers suspended for their alleged role in the recruitment scam.
Probe committee chairman and additional director general of police (ADGP) Shailjakant Mishra had alleged that some women candidates selected for Police Wireless Department were sexually exploited in lieu of recruitment.
