Maharashtra men, Karnataka women win team championship titles

Panaji, Oct 12 (UNI) Maharashtra and Karnataka clinched the Men's and Women's team championship titles respectively in the 7th All India BSNL Carrom tournament played at the Peddem indoor sports complex in Mapusa.

In the Men's team championship finals, Maharashtra edged out Tamil Nadu by 2-1. Farat Ali (Mah) bt R Babu (TN) 20-25, 25-12, 25-16, Santosh Sawant (Mah) made short work of V Sathish (TN) 25-3, 25-5 and Nilesh Narayani/Ranjit Mane (Mah) lost to G Chandra Sekhar/S Uma Sankar (TN) 25-21, 22-25, 17-25.

In the Women's event, Karnataka blanked Assam by 3-0. B Rama (Kar) bt Bhanu Das (Assam) 4-25, 25-14, 25-24, G Bharati (Kar) beat Nabanitha Deka (Assam) 25-10, 25-9 and P K Mangalamani/Umamani (Kar) beat Bharathi Medi/Poonam Sonowar (Assam) 10-25, 25-23, 25-17.

Gujarat men and MTNL Mumbai women had to rest content with the third place respectively.

M D Malini of Karnataka and A S Motagi of Maharashtra sailed into the Veteran Women's singles finals. In the semi-finals, Malini (Kar) beat S S Kanade (Mah) 25-8, 25-7, while A S Motagi (Mah) beat Kaladevi 25-4, 25-23.

In the Veteran Men's singles, S R Prasad (Andhra Pradesh), H P Joshi (Gujarat), G Samson (Andhra Pradesh) and M Ramana Murthy (Tamil Nadu) moved into the semi-finals.

In the quarter-final singles, S R Prasad (AP) beat Babu Rao Balaji (MP) 25-7, 25-16; H P Joshi (Guj) beat Dhani Ram Kamli (Assam) 25-6, 25-11; G Samson (AP) beat P J Dinakaran (Karnataka) 25-22, 21-25, 25-20; and M Ram Murthy (TN) beat Jamal Akthar (Mah) 25-18, 25-14.

In the Men's singles, S T Sawant (Maharashtra), Santhosh Jadhav (MTNL-Mumbai), R N Nayak (Orissa) and R Babu (TN) moved into the fourth round, while in the Women's singles, Bhanu Das (Assam), N Sudha (NTR Delhi), Rashmi Kumar (Bihar) and D Anuradha (Andhra Pradesh) also moved into fourth round.
