Indian athletes win 150 medals in Special Olympics

New Delhi, Oct 12 (UNI) India bagged 150 medals, including 36 gold, at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai.

They also won 44 silver and 70 bronze with the largest chunk of medals coming from athletics, with the Indians winning 10 gold, 11 silver and two bronze from the discipline.

More than 7,000 special athletes competed in 25 different Olympic-type and demonstration sports in the October 2 to 11 event.

During the Games, Special Olympics honoured 13 individuals and the city of Shanghai for the ''special'' contributions they have made to promote and raise awareness of the Special Olympics movement around the world.

Chairman Special Olympics Bharat, Air Marshal Denzil Keelor was honoured for his special efforts in enhancing the Special Olympics Movement in India.

India has a target of registering 500,000 athletes by the year end and till date registered more than 420,000 athletes.

Indian special athletes won medals in aquatics, roller skating, cycling, table tennis, power lifting, bocce, badminton, soccer, cricket, basketball, volleyball, handball a release said here today.
