Fennell expresses satisfaction over progress of work

Pune, Oct 12 (UNI) The Commonwealth Games president Michael Fennell today visited Balewadi, the venue of the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG), and expressed satisfaction over the progress made so far on the various stadia.

''I am indeed impressed that the work is going on at a fast pace on the venues and will get over within the stipulated time frame,'' Mr Fennell said.

Talking to UNI, after personally visiting the sites along with Commonwealth Games treasurer Austin Sealy, Mr Fennell said the way the work is progressing it is impressive and he has no doubt that the work will be completed before the stipulated time limit.

Mr Sealy, who visited Pune for the first time, also expressed satisfaction. He, however, felt that the work at certain venues be expidited at a brisk pace.

The games oraganising Committee chairman MP Suresh Kalmadi himself conducted the tour of the sites and looked much happier after Union Minister for Urban Development Jaipal Reddy's on the spot announcement of additional funds of Rs 300 crore from the Centre's flagship Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project for getting the most modern equipment and the infrastructure facilties before the curtain goes up for the 2008 CYG.

''I am indeed thankful to Mr Reddy for allocation of additional funds, which will go a long way in getting the various stadia completed much before the stipulated time frame,'' a confident Mr Kalmadi pointed out.

Mr Reddy had earlier sanctioned a budget of Rs 400 crore for the developement of infrastructure for Pune and its transport.

Pune Divisional Commissioner Dr Nitin Kareer and the Pimpri- Chinchwad Muncipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Dilip Band gave a solid presentation of various works being undertaken at the venue of the games and also about other developmental activities in various parts of the city.

Mr Fennell reiterated his confidence and high expectations, saying that ''Pune is ready, though there is still a full year before the curtian on the third edition of the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) goes up.'' UNI IS SSS RAR BST2330
