Mumbai, Oct 12 (UNI) The number of deaths due to leptospirosis has reached 22 this year as compared to 3 last year and has been a major cause of concern for the Brihanmumbai Municpal Corporation (BMC), said civic chief Jairaj Phatak today.
Speaking to reporters here, Mr Phatak said ''The number of deaths due to other monsoon-related diseases has not increased substantially as compared to 2006, except for leptospirosis, which has been a cause of concern for the BMC.'' Last year, the total number of monsoon-related deaths was 35 as compared to 53 this year.
Additional Municipal Commissioner, Manu Kumar Srivastav said ''The increase in lepto deaths has been due to negligence on the part of the deceased as in most of cases treatment was sought in the last stages of the disease.'' UNI JN SSS SKB2034
