Ludhiana, Oct 11 (UNI) An MoU has been signed between the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and the United Breweries Ltd, Patiala to promote malt barley cultivation in Punjab.
The MoU was signed by Dr G S Chahal, Director of Research, PAU and Mr R K Jindal, Divisional Vice-President (Malting), UB Ltd.
Patiala, who also handed over a cheque for Rs.4.47 lakh as the first installment to Dr M S Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU.
Under this programme, the UB Ltd will fund a project for a period of five years to intensify the research jointly at PAU and R&D wing of UB Ltd to develop barley varieties suitable for malt purpose.
The major part of research to develop malt barley varieties will be executed at PAU, while the major part for malt quality evaluation will be done by UB Ltd at Patiala. The malt barley varieties developed will be brought under cultivation under contract farming by UB Ltd.
It will be a major step towards the establishment of linkages between PAU and malt industry and between malt industry and farmers to promote barley cultivation in the state.
It will be beneficial for the industry in terms of good quality of raw material and for the farmers in terms of assured and better returns of their produce, an official release here said.
Dr G S Dhindsa and Dr. Sarvjeet Singh of PAU and Mr R K Jindal and Mr S Ganesh Singh of UB Ltd will lead the research programme.
