Malerkotla, Oct 10 (UNI) Police today resorted to firing in the air and mild lathi charge to disperse the agitating transporters who had blocked the Malerkotla-Ludhiana highway for several hours in protest against alleged manhandling of a driver by the members of the local canter union.
According to the sources, canter union president Mohammad Sattar, along with other members, entered the premises of a private carrier here and allegedly manhandled a driver.
In protest, the transporters demanding action against the attackers, blocked the national highway.
When the negotiations failed and angry transporters manhandled SHO Swarnjit Singh, the police resorted to mild baton charge and firing in the air, to disperse the crowd.
Later, on the demand of transporters, the police registered a case under section 452 of the IPC against the Canter union president Mohammad Sattar and five other unidentfied people.
However, no arrests have been made so far, police sources said.
