BSE Sensex gains 378 points

Mumbai, Oct 10: After the record-breaking surge of 788 points, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensitive index today moved up further by 378 points and closed at an all-time high of 18,658.25 on easing of mid-term poll concerns over the nuke deal and firm Asian markets providing a fresh boost to the Indian bourses, pushing it higher by 2.07 per cent.

According to dealers, the market made a firm start, rising about 200 point higher at 18,473.43 in the opening session and during the intra-day trade touched the all time high of 18,703.67. It took a dip to 18,436.99 during the mid-day trade and reverted back to a higher level before closing firm crossing 18.5K in an ultra-active market.

Meanwhile, the broader based S&P CNX Nifty of National Stock Exchange (NSE) was up 114.20 points, or 2.14 pc to 5,441.45. It had hit a all-time high of 5,454.70 and touched a low of 5328.15 in intra-day trade.

IT stocks edged higher ahead of Infosys' results, which are due tomorrow. Capital goods, banking, realty and metal stocks surged at the end of the session. However, Auto stocks underperformed today and the market breadth turned negative in the latter part of trade.

Mid-cap and small-cap indices underperformed the Sensex and European markets were subdued today.

BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 7793 crore as compared to previous day turnover of Rs 8036.49 crore. The BSE Mid Cap index rose by 2.62 per cent to 7,400.21 and BSE Small Cap index rose by 2.1 pc to 8,985.50. Reliance Energy surged by 11.78 pc to Rs 1,542 and was the top gainer from the Sensex pack, hiting its all-time high of Rs 1,542 today. Reliance Communications moved up by 11.39 pc to Rs 713.90 and Reliance Capital rose 8.63 pc to Rs 1,767.

Maruti Suzuki was up by 7.73 pc to Rs 1,104.70 and Bharti Airtel moved up by 6.71 pc to Rs 1,050.90.

Metal stocks also extended gains, as Tata Steel was up by 5.64 pc to Rs 833.50, followed by Hindalco Industries up by 1.95 pc to Rs 164.70 and JSW Steel 5.82 pc up at Rs 851, edging higher.

Capital goods stocks also surged as Larsen&Toubro (L&T) was higher by 4.62 pc at Rs 3,161.95 after it was announced that Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) has been awarded with an order valued at Rs 693 crore.

Wind turbine maker Suzlon Energy rose by 1.35 per cent to Rs 1,669 after its US subsidiary Suzlon Energy Corp received a 400 mega watt contract from Houston-based Horizon Wind Energy. BHEL rose by 2.02 pc to Rs 2,240.
