Centre earmarks Rs 70 cr for NE varsities

Aizawl, Oct 10 (UNI) The department of Science&Technology (DST), GoI, has earmarked Rs 70 crores for universities across the North East states for the next five years.

This was announced by DST secretary Dr T Ramasami during the just concluded NER university vice-chancellors' meeting here.

The scheme also allows up to Rs 50 lakh each for 50 colleges offering science subjects, for science equipment and scientific research.

The Mizoram University hopes that some colleges in Mizoram with science subjects will benefit from the scheme.

The scheme also includes establishment of summer/winter schools, invitation of visiting professors and opportunities for students to conduct researches abroad, MzU officials said.

About Rs 50 lakh each is also allocated for the NE's universities for procurement of electric power supply stabiliser, the DST secretary told the vice-chancellors, adding that if funds are judiciously used, the Centre would be willing to sanction more funds.
