Hyderabad, Oct 9 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said the state was numero uno in the country in respect of construction of houses for poor under the Indiramma Housing Scheme.
Reviewing the progress of the scheme with the officials, Dr Reddy said construction of 21 lakh houses had been completed during the last three years.
The government's aim was to construct 80 lakh houses before 2009 he said and asked the officials to speed up the housing programme with commitment.
While refuting the allegations by the Opposition parties on the prestigious schemne, he said the government had decided to provide houses to all the eligible poor irrespective of party affiliation.
The Chief Minister, who is proceeding to Kurnool tomorrow to participate in the Indiramma Gruhapravesams (house warming ceremony), appealed to the Opposition parties to extend their support to the scheme as it was meant only for the poor.
The government had allocated Rs 5,000 crore in the Budget for the construction, an official press release quoting Dr Reddy said.
