4 from MP get 10 yrs jail, 1 lakh fine for drug trafficking

Nagpur, Oct 9 (UNI) A special court here sentenced four people from Madhya Pradesh (MP) to 10- year imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh each for drug trafficking.

Special judge Shivajirao Patil at the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) Court here found Brijlal Baldhari Kathia (34), a resident of district Narsinghpur, MP, Munna alias Lekhram Chhannulal Nagesh (25), Lakhanlal Chhannulal Mehra (23) and Santosh Chhotelal Baskar (25), all residents of district Hoshangabad (MP), guilty of possession and transportation of marijuana.

Handing down the judgement, the court said that the four will have to undergo another year's imprisonment if they failed to pay the imposed fine.

According to the prosecution, staff from the Nagpur (District) Rural Police had seized 252 kilograms of marijuana ('ganja'), hidden in bags of sugar, worth nearly Rs 1.76 lakh in the open market from a jeep near village Tarsa, about 50 kilometres from here, on August 30 last. The vehicle had been stopped on suspicion and searched, the prosecution added.

During interrogation, the four had revealed to police that the stuff was being taken from Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh into MP. The marijuana and the vehicle were seized and an offence under the relevant sections of the NDPS Act was registered against the four.
