Chennai, Oct 8 (UNI) Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Suresh Kalmadi said the work to construct a Formula One track in the National Capital Region will begin soon.
Talking to newspersons, after giving away the trophies to winners of the JK Tyre National Racing Championship here yesterday, Kalmadi said the IOA was in the process of finalising the site for the track and a master plan.
''We will decide on the land soon. It would take one-and- half years to put up the track,'' he said.
IOA has shortlisted to sites -- Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Sohana, near Gurgaon -- to lay the track.
''We are making right progress. I am keen that F1 should come to India. Formula One will not be really global unless India is also on the F1 map,'' he said.
''I thought I should begin the journey of bringing the F-1 to India from Chennai. I am really charged after my visit.'' Mr Kalmadi said the track would be set up at Noida or Sohana depending on which of the two state governments would provide maximum facility.
He added the IOA wanted the track to be on par with those in the Asian countries where F1 Grand Prix is being held.
