Irani Trophy: Mumbai in dire straits

By Staff

Rajkot, Oct 8: Mumbai were in dire straits as they lost six wickets for 98 runs in their second innings after conceding 19-runs lead in their match against Rest of India (ROI) on the third day of the five-day Irani Cup at the Madhav Rao Scindia Cricket Stadium here today.

Medium-pacer Munaf Patel bowled with fire to capture three wickets in two overs and was also instrumental in the run out of opener Sahil Kukreja as Mumbai were in tatters, with six of their batsmen sent back to the pavilion.

The only hope for Mumbai is the presence of Wasim Jaffar, who was batting on 21, while Ajit Agarkar was unbeaten on 7 runs when stumps were drawn.

Mumbai began their second innings after bowling out RoI for 472.

Sahil Kukreja and Ajinkya Rahane played cautiously and put on 43 for the opening wicket before the latter was caught at second slip by Akash Chopra of medium-pacer Ishant Sharma after making 27 runs.

Kukreja also went in same over. He was run out while taking a single. Munaf Patel quickly collected the ball at square leg and uprooted the stump with direct throw before he could safely land his bat in the crease. He made 14.

Mumbai's score was then 43 for two. Seven runs later, captain Amol Muzumdar lost his wicket. He got an outside edge off the bowling of R Bose and Akash Chopra made no mistake in the second slip.

P Naik also did not last long when Munaf Patel in his third over trapped him leg before after he made 13. After Naik's exit, A Nair joined Wasim Jaffar and immediately despatched two fours off Patel's bowling. A Nair was out in a similar way as his skipper was out and gave Akash Chopra his third catch of the day in the last ball of Patel's third over.

Patel, in his fourth over, dismissed Ramesh Pawer for naught, bowling him with an inswinger.

Earlier, RoI started their innings at the overnight score of 292 for four with Parthiv Patel not out at 161 and Manoj Tiwary not on on 56. The duo today added another 59-runs before the former was caught and bowled by Iqbal Abdulla. Parthiv made 179.

Manoj Tiwary also completed the coveted ton with the help of nine fours and five sixes. Finally, he was bowled by medium-pacer R Verma after scoring 130 runs.

Patel scored 31 before he was trapped lbw off left arm spinner Abdulla. RoI's innings folded at 472 after gaining vital 19 runs lead.

Medium-pacer R Verma was the most successful bowler for Mumbai who scalped five wickets for it, while left-arm spinner Abdulla captured three wickets for 100.
