New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (CPI) today demanded a probe into the alleged financial irregularities of politician-cum-businessman Baijayanta Panda.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the CPI pointed out that the Member of Parliament from Orissa had managed to get a waiver of loans amounting to the sum of Rs 2300 crore from ten Indian banks--including nine National ones.

''Does this not amount to the outright loot of public funds? Could this misappropriation have been possible without the political clout this man wields as a member of Rajya Sabha in orissa?'' the party asked in the letter.

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan requested Dr Singh for a probe into the ''murky'' affairs in the interest of clean governance and probity in public life, the letter added.
