Tiruchirapalli, Oct 7 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Panchayats Employees Association today appealed to the State Government to redesignate the post of Village Panchayat Assistants as Village Panchayat Secretaries.

Talking to newsperons soon after their state executive meeting held here, Association President R Rangaraj said the meeting also appealed to fix them at the pay scale of junior assistant cadre of the State Government. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the meeting.

Though the Government has fixed the basic pay for all the village panchayat assistants, they were denied the benefits such as pension, medical allowance and travelling allowance, enjoyed by the employees of other departments.

Mr Rangaraj wanted the Government to extend all concessions to them, including job security, as in the case of the Government employees.

Stating that the Government had announced a ten per cent increase in the existing promotional opportunities during last year's budget session, he urged the Government to issue a GO in this regard.

The meeting also urged the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to solve their long pending demands, while announcing decision on providing more powers to the local body chief, based on the high power committee's recommendations.

It was decided to hold the Association's State Conference at Chennai next month.
