Lucknow, Oct 7 (UNI) Items one for take for granted otherwise -- paan masala, paan, bidi, pack of cards, cash and match stricks -- were today recovered from jails during the surprise state-wide raids carried out by the district administrations.
The surprise raids were carried out on the instructions of the Uttar Pradesh government.
In Lucknow, while the raid yielded nothing while in Jalaun district jail, a joint team of district administration and police recovered a country-made pistol. In Rae Bareli, a knife used to chop vegetables, was recovered.
Similarly, scissors, blades and pocket knives were seized from various other jails, including Azamgarh. In most of the raids, officials recovered 'luxury' items, including bidi, paan, gutkha, paan masala, cigarettes and packs of playing cards.
In Jhansi, besides match sticks, the raiding party recovered facial cream and talcum powder from one of the inmates.
In barrack number 8 of Sultanpur jail, authorities seized injectable vitamin and a syringe. The authorities also recovered Rs 170 in cash.
Two prisoners were found possessing 299 sachets of morphine and two gm brown sugar during a surprise raid at the Barabanki district jail.
Reports said nothing incriminating was found during raids conducted by the joint team of police and ADM city Indra Vikram Singh at the Varanasi district and central jails. However, some non registered persons were found in the hospitals inside the two jails.
While a detailed report on the raids together with recoveries made was being prepared, the state government is to take stern action against the authorities including some senior jail officials for their alleged connivance with criminals in providing them with items banned inside the jail premises.
Interestingly, this time the raids yielded neither blue movice CDs or mobile phones. Cell phones, cell phone chargers and sim cards were recovered during several previous raids in the state.
