Shillong, Oct 7 (UNI) Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma has mooted the idea of creation of two separate ministries for traditional institutions and the traditional medicines in Meghalaya.
Mr Sangma's proposal assumed significance in the wake of the tribal chieftains in Meghalaya demanding constitutional recognition from the Union government as per the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement of December 15, 1947 within the Constitution of India for the unique administrative, legislative and judicial powers.
The state government should empower the traditional institutions by way of creating the separate ministries for them and traditional institutions, Mr Sangma said, while speaking at the Dorbar Ri (People's Parliament), held yesterday at Mawphlang village. Mawphlang, a picturesque village is about 25 km from Shillong.
Mr Sangma, however, said the time is too short for the present government to empower the traditional institutions and the next government will do the needful.
