Police burst tear gas, open fire to quell clash
Periyakulam, Tamil Nadu, Oct 7 (UNI) Police burst tear-gas shells and opened five rounds of fire in the air to quell a major clash between two Dalit groups at Nadupatti village in Theni district this evening.
Police said the clash, between the people of two Dalit villages-- Sinduvampatti and Nadupatti, broke out over conducting a ritual in a local Mariyamman temple.
Four persons were seriously injured in the clash.
Though the police initially resorted to lathicharge to chase away the clashing mob, it did.
On information, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar and other senior police officials rushed to the village.
Seven persons were arrested in connection with the violence.
The seriously injured people were admitted to Government Hospital at Theni.
Additional force had been posted in and around the villages, police added.
