No proposal to cancel gun licence exemption in Kodagu
Madikeri, Oct 7 (UNI) No proposal has been sent for cancellation of gun licence exemption in the hilly district of Kodagu, Superintendent of Police Trilok Chandra said here today.
Reacting to a statement of MLC Arun Machaiah, who had expressed concern over the reported proposal of the police department on cancellation of the special privilege, he clarified that ''the exemption provided during the historical period cannot be cancelled.'' As a special privilege for the people of the district since the dynastic rule of erstwhile Kodagu kings, the Jamma holders of Kodagu are entitled to own a gun without a licence or permission from the Government.
''The department follows the usual procedure of checking and verifying the licences. Sometimes, the police personnel may personally visit the houses for verification or may do so at the police stations concerned. This measure is required to control the holding of illegal weapons in the district,'' he said.
