Madurai, Oct 6 (UNI) Police arrested 14 students of the Government Law College, Madurai, for staging a road blockade near the District Court complex, demanding criminal proceedings against a former Panchayat President for assaulting a lawyer, even as a student threatened to commit suicide over the issue.
The students demanded that the police register 'attempt to murder' case against Killivalavan, a former president of Samayanallur Panchayat in the district, for allegedly assaulting Suresh Kumar (25), an advocate. Mr Kumar was admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital here.
When the police arrested the students over roadroko, a third-year law student, Vallarasu (20), created a flutter by threatening to commit suicide by jumping from the third floor of Raja Muthaiah Mandram, a complex near the Court, if the police failed to initiate criminal proceedings against Killivalavan.
City Police Commissioner K Nandabalan and other police officers rushed to the spot and attempted to persuade the student from taking any extreme step. However, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services team climbed the building and tamed the youth.
The youth became unconscious and was admitted to the government hospital here.
The Madurai Rural police had arrested Killivalavan and two of his associates yesterday for assaulting the lawyer recently.
