TN govt honours Anand with Rs 25 lakh purse

Chennai, Oct 5: The Tamil Nadu government today announced a cash award of Rs 25 lakh for world Champion Viswanathan Anand who won the championsip on September 30 in Mexico.

An official press release here said Anand's feat had brought glory to Tamil Nadu besides the honour to the country and to Asian chess as well.

Anand, it may be recalled had won his first world crown seven years ago, held in Tehran.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi honoured with cash awards, the medal winners for India, hailing from Tamil Nadu in the 18th Melbourne Commonwealth Games and the tenth SAF Games in Colombo.

Thirty eight sportspersons including ten women received the cash worth Rs 1.31 crore in all.
