Chandigarh, Oct 5 (UNI) Cricketer Joginder Sharma and captain of Indian Women's hockey team Mamta Kharab, who were recently appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) by the Haryana government, today joined service.

The two sportspersons submitted their joining report at the Haryana Police Headquarters at Panchkula near here.

Interacting with mediapersons, Joginder Sharma said their appointment as DSPs by the state government would encourage the sportspersons of the state.

Mamta Kharab said hockey players had earlier been given employment only by the Indian Railways but now the Haryana government had also come forward for honouring the outstanding sportspersons to encourage the game among the youth.

Inspector General of Police (Personnel) B S Sandhu said that both newly appointed officers should pass through the training and they could continue their practice side by side.

Sandhu said Haryana Police had provided three per cent reservation for the outstanding sportspersons in the force.

He said a notification for the direct appointment of six outstanding sportspersons as inspectors had been issued by the Police Department.

Haryana Police had already notified the appointment of 97 men and 24 women from the sports categories, he added.
