New Delhi, Oct 5 (UNI) The government today said export of onion will be permitted on a case-by-case basis.
''Onion can be exported through licences and the quantum of the licence would be decided by the Food Ministry,'' Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath told reporters here.
The Government had yesterday issued a notification which said the overseas sale of onion will be permissible only under an export license through designated canalising agencies.
Onion prices have risen to Rs 25-35 per kg in retail markets across the country from about Rs 15 a kg two months back on reports that the onion crop has been damaged in parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
Earlier, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation, said there was no bar on exports. It was only going slow on granting no-objection certificates (NOC) to exporters to ensure adequate availability of the commodity in the domestic market.
