9 feared drowned in backwaters of Cauvery

Mysore, Oct 5 (UNI) Nine people, including six women and two girls, were feared drowned when two coracles capsized in the backwaters of river Cauvery near Sagarakatte in this district of Karnataka today.

Police said the incident occurred when 13 people went for a picnic in the backwaters after visiting their native village Ramanahalli. However, four people swam to safety.

While two bodies were recovered, search was on for the other bodies.

The victims were identified as Rathnamma (30), Vinodini (27), Sheela (22), Dhanalakshmi (19), Anand (30), Shobha (22), Manjula (20), Maduri (seven) and Rakshitha (seven).

Deputy Commissioner Channappa Gowda and other officials visited the spot and released Rs 1,000 for the last rites of the victims.
