Jalandhar, Oct 4 (UNI) A petition was filed in the local court against Team India for showing disrespect to the National flag after winning the Twenty-20 World Cup held in Johannesburg, South Africa on September 24.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Varinder Aggrawal today, after recording the statements of the petitioner Advocate Arvind Sharda, fixed October 23 as the next date for hearing and recording of statements of the witnesses.
Advocate Sharda in the petition has made BCCI President Sharad Pawar, BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla and ESPN-Star Sports commentator Ravi Shashtri as witnesses, as the said offence was committed in their presence.
The petition was filed against the national cricket team members Captain Mohinder Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, R Uthapa, Rohit Sharma, Rudra Pratap Singh, Harbhajan Singh, S Sreesanth, Ajit Agarkar, Joginder Sharma, Virender Sehwag, Romesh Powar, Murlai Kartik and others for showing disrespect and contempt to the National Flag after winning the Twenty-20 World Cup defeating Pakistan in Johannesburg, South Africa for nearly an hour.
The petitioner in the complaint alleged that after defeating Pakistan in the finals, the players showed all sort of disrespect to the Flag, including putting the National Flag around neck and back, pouring Champagne on the Tricolour, allowing the Flag to fall on the ground from one's hand and carrying the National Flag up-side down.
The advocate argued that the players committed grave offence before millions of Indians and other members of Board present there, did not stop them from indulging in such kind of unpardonable behaviour.
The petition was filed under Flag Code of India read with The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 for showing disrespect and contempt to the Indian Natioanl Flag.
