Shillong, Oct 4 (UNI) Prime accused in a murder case Constable Arwil Ch Sangma has denied havnig murdered former Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) W R Marbaniang's maidservant.
Speaking to newspersons here yesterday after being released on bail, Constable Sangma said, ''It was not me who killed Rinehskhem, but the CID had forced me to accept that I had committed the crime.'' The 26-year-old domestic maid was allegedly found murdered on March seven in one of the rooms of Mr Marbaniang's house.
The accused, an orderly of the former DGP, who was arrested by CID sleuths on July nine, was released after more than three months in detention.
The CBI which was investigating into the mysterious death of the domestic maid had interrogated the constable thrice last month.
Mr Sangma will have to appear before the Investigating Officer of the CBI once a week for a one month.
Asked about the CID alleging that he had an affair with the maid, Mr Sangma rubbished it and said, ''I have not murdered her and I was never in love with her. I don't know why they arrested me, but this crime was not committed by me.'' Initially, police had claimed that the deceased had committed suicide and had not been murdered, raising more doubts, especially after the second post mortem report confirmed that it was a case of ''homicide'' and not ''suicide''.
A local advocate, A H Hazarika, who filed a PIL pleading for CBI probe into the death, said, ''Police had created enough confusion in the minds of the general public and even tried their best to cover up the case as a suicide.'' Gauhati High Court had ordered a CBI probe since the murder had occurred in the former police chief's residence.
The court had also directed the CBI to take an early decision in this regard so that further investigation could be carried out promptly.
