Ahmedabad, Oct 4 (UNI) A Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) delegation today met Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy here and pleaded for a single phase poll.
The delegation was led by GPCC chief Bharatsinh Solanki and Leader of Opposition in the assembly Arjun Modhwadia.
In a meeting with Mr Gopalaswamy, the delegation members asked the CEC to hold the poll in a single phase which, they said, if concluded within a day can be a free and fair assembly election.
Mr Solanki and Mr Modhwadia pointed out that in the past, both (parliamentary and assembly) elections were held on a single day to prevent bogus voting and casting of votes by those who had their names registered at more than one place. Therefore, the best way is to hold and end the assembly poll on a single day.
They also pleaded for implementation of code of conduct rules, as a temperory measure, in order to prevent the state Chief Minister and others from misusing Central grants.
Expressing alarm over the state government's attempts to misuse government machinery, election norms and adopting unfair means to influence the forthcoming assembly poll, the delegation said the ruling BJP was clandestinely recruiting its party workers as 'Sahayaks' and government computer data operators as 'Election Assistants'. These people have been trained in large numbers and these ''workers'' might carry out the bogus voting in selected places.
The Congress chief also said the BJP has used a subterfuge to elect its own party workers by issuing an advertisement in a local daily on September 12, calling for 'Election assistants'.
Despite the EC's directive to the state government against the recruitment of 'election assistants', the Chief minister has again tried to recruit persons through District Development agency, Mr Solanki alleged.
