KP better than Colly for captaincy: Gough

By Staff

London, Oct 3 (UNI) Former pace spearhead Darren Gough believes that middle-order batsman Kevin Pietersen was the right choice to lead England's ODI side in place of current incumbent Paul Collingwood.

Though the South Africa-born Pietersen was among the probables to take over the reign from outgoing skipper Michael Vaughan, he later ruled himself out of the reckoning, with Paul Collingwood subsequently named as Vaughan's successor.

''For me Kevin Pietersen is the one who should be captaining England's one-day side.

''I know Kevin hasn't captained any clubs. But that bloke is a genius. He bats like no one else in the world,'' Gough said.

''When you're in team meetings before a game and you are talking about the opposition, there's one guy in that meeting who always pops up with something about the opposition that makes you sit up and listen.

The The 37-years-old Yorkshire skipper further went on to add that ''He has such an intelligent cricket brain and I think he's wasted not being the skipper of England's one-day cricket side.'' the Yorkshire skipper was quoted by the English media as saying.

However, Gough is of the opinion that the reason behind Collingwood appointment for the top job was a result of his friendly relations with his predecessor.

''The thinking behind it was there wouldn't be too much bitterness between them both if Collingwood was made the one-day captain. It was a surprise decision,'' England's highest ODI wicket-taker said.
