SP demands dismissal of Addl DGP over remarks on women constables

Lucknow, Oct 2 (UNI) The Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) today demanded the dismissal of a senior Uttar Pradesh police official for his claims that some women police constables were recruited in the department in exchange for sexual favours.

The Samajwadi Mahila Sabha held a demonstration here to protest the remarks of Additional Director General of Police Shailja Kant Mishra. ''We will take our fight for his ouster to every village of the state...while the women constables have lost their jobs, they have also lost dignity,'' said the SP Women Wing's National president Madhu Gupta after the demonstration.

On Sunday, Mr Mishra had revealed that women candidates were physically exploited to get appointment in the police department in the state Yesterday, hundreds of police radio operators sacked on Sunday following large sacle irregularities in their appointments, had started gathering outside the police wireless headquarters at Mahanagar here. Shouting anti-government slogans, the sacked cops demanded immediate reinstatement. The women constables denied that some of them were physically expolited in lieu of appointments.

In the latest wave of annulment of recruitments made by the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government, the Mayawati government had on Sunday night sacked 7,400 police constables, including 1200 wireless operators. The 1200 operators included 232 women.
