Colombo, Oct 2 (UNI) The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today expressed surprise over reports of top eight cricketers, including skipper Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara, signing up for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
''We are unaware of anything regarding this. As far as we are concerned, no Sri Lankan national team player has informed us to this effect,'' a top SLC official said on condition of anonymity.
Expressing anger over these reports, the official said that SLC was the only authentic body which could make any announcement with regard to Sri Lankan national cricketers.
''At the moment we are trying to establish contacts with the IPL officials to seek clarification and to state our current position,'' he said.
The Chairman of the SLC was invited by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to New Delhi a couple of weeks ago mainly to secure the support of the SLC for the IPL.
Reports reaching here had quoted Lalit Modi, the Convenor of the IPL, saying that eight members of the current Sri Lankan squad have already signed up for the IPL.
Other Sri Lankan players reported to have singed contract were Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Farveez Maharoof and Nuwan Zoysa.
SLC has already announced that any Sri Lankan player signing contract with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) would be banned from playing domestic as well as international cricket.
