Power devolution: Sarpanches stage dharna on Gandhi Jayanti

Hyderabad, Oct 2 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Sarpanches Association today staged a sit-in in front of the Gandhi statue on the Assembly premises, demanding power devolution.

The association members led by its president Y Babu Rajendraprasad, MLC, submitted a charter of demands to Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and urged him to resolve the issues concerning 21,943 sarpanches in the state.

Police arrested the agitators and released them later.

They demanded that the government delegate powers to them in ten subjects as agreed in February last and restore power supply for street lighting and irrigation schemes in 20,611 minor gram pachayats, disconnected for non-payment of arrears.
