Gujarat pays rich tributes to Gandhi, Shashtri

Gandhinagar, Oct 2 (UNI) Gujarat paid rich tributes to Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on the occasion of their birth anniversaries here today.

Today is the Mahatma's 138th birth anniversary, which is being observed as 'International Non-Violence Day. While it is Shastri's 102nd birth anniversary.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi, as a tribute to Gandhiji, announced a rise in pay to Anaganwadi women workers from monthly Rs 500 to Rs 1,500.

Mr Modi announced 'Mata Yashoda' awards to these women workers totalling worth around Rs 1.10 crore.

In another gesture, the state Home Department set free 90 prisoners from Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad. On the occasion, these prisoners vowed to lead peaceful and honest lives as tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Mangaldas Patel garlanded the lifesize picture of Mahtama Gandhi at Gujarat Vidhan Sabha complex here this morning.

All over Gujarat, including at Mahatma's birtplace Porbandar, both ruling BJP and opposition Congress had organised several functions to pay tributes to these two leaders, who mainly formed India's struggle of freedom.
