New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) The BJP today staged a 'dharna' in Karol Bagh area of Central Delhi, on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, to draw people's attention against the demolition of the Ram Sethu.

Addressing the gathering BJP president Rajnath Singh said the Ram Sethu, built by Lord Ram, who was very dear to the father of the nation, was being demolished despite several feasible alternatives available to the government's Setusamudram project.

''All his life Bapu followed the path shown by Sri Ram and his main dream was to establish 'Ram Rajya' where no one suffered or was griefed with sorrow. Today the UPA government was denying the very existence of Ram, which was a slap on our belief and faith.'' Like all other dreams of Gandhiji, the Ram Sethu too was being demolished by the present dispensation much against the wishes of the country's majority community and despite the government being sounded that it was a matter of fath for millions of Hindus around the world, he said.

''The effort is to attack on the symbols of our faith and culture, which will not be tolerated.'' Warning the government of serious consequences if it went against the people's wishes, the BJP chief said the move would be disastrous not only on the ecology but also for those who were bent upon trampling the faith of the people.

Singing Gandhi's favourite hymns -- Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, Patit Pawan Sitaram -- protestors sang 'bhajans' and recited the 'sundarkand' from the holy Ramayana -- another favorite of Bapu.
