Chennai, Sep 30 (UNI) Marumalarchi DMK (MDK) General Secretary Vaiko today differed with his alliance party leader J Jayalalithaa on the viability of Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP).

While Ms Jayalalithaa, in a statement here said the project was not at all economically viable, Mr Vaiko said the project was absolutely necessary for the development of Tamil Nadu.

In a statement, he said the project should definitely be implemented, but the DMK Government, instead of pursuing the right move, diluted the issue by taking on the Hindus.

He said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, instead of pressing for the speedy implementation of the project, had hurt the sentiments of Hindus, by asking in which college Lord Rama had studied to build Ram Sethu.

Mr Vaiko faulted Mr Karunanidhi for trying to force the bandh on the people of the State, instead of finding ways to implement the SSCP. The Supreme Court's stay against the bandh was a condemnation for the Chief Minister's authoritarian move, he said.

In total contrast to Mr Vaiko's stand, Ms Jayalalithaa said the SSCP would be a total flop. The argument that the new channel would help to reduce the shipping time was false, she said, adding that the project would not bring any development to the State.
