UN envoy meets Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar rulers
Bangkok, Sep 30 (UNI) UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari met with Myanmar's incarcerated pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi this afternoon in Yangon after a meeting with the country's senior military rulers in the new capital Naypyitaw.
However, the UN envoy is yet to meet Myanmar's top military ruler Than Shwe.
"He looks forward to meeting Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, before the conclusion of his mission," the UN Information Centre in Yangon said in a press statement this evening.
In Naypyitaw today, Mr Gambari was received by Acting Prime Minister Lieutenant-General Thein Sein, Minister for Information, Brigadier General Kyaw San, Minister for Culture, Major General Khin Aung Myint and Deputy Foreign Minister U Kyaw Thu.
"He conveyed a message from the Secretary-General," said the UN statement.
"In Yangon, Mr Gambari met for over an hour with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. He also consulted with the United Nations Country Team and the International Committee of the Red Cross," the statement added.
