New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) Top seed Aditya Madkekar faced some anxious moments before prevailing over Vijay Prasanth in a first-round singles match in the DSCL Open National tennis championship here today.
Aditya had to dig deep into his reserves to beat Vijay 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Both players were stuck to the baseline, but it was Vijay's tenacity which stood out. However, in the decider, Madkekar showed that he was not going to lose a match that he was expected to win with ease.
Third seed Vishnu Vardhan was in good form as he got past Delhi's Shivang Mishra 6-3, 6-4. Vishnu, who had made good progress last year, came up with the big shots when needed to get past Shivang.
Former champion Vijay Kannan beat Yogesh Phogat 6-1, 6-4 with his inimitable brand of slow tennis, the backhand slice and placements being used to good effect.
As for Yuki Bhambri, the young Delhi boy played with amazing consistency to defeat Sandeep Choudhary 6-2, 6-2.
Another former champion, Nitin Kirtane, still good enough to come through the qualifiers, played his guts out. In the end, tiring legs gave away and he lost to Christopher Marquis 6-2, 5-7, 4-6.
In the women's section, fancied Isha Lakhani toyed with Anukriti Prasad 6-1, 6-2 while Sanaa Bhambri had to fight it out before ousting Shivika Burman 6-3, 6-4.
