Sania drops one rung in WTA rankings; Bopanna drops eight spots

By Staff

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) Sania Mirza's absence from the tennis court for three weeks has affected her rankings as she dropped one rung to 29th in the latest WTA chart issued today.

Since her early exit from the US Open, the 20-year-old has been out of action nursing a wrist injury which also forced her miss the Sunfeast Open in Kolkata.

The Hyderabadi girl is going to make her comeback in the Japan Open and will look to improve her rankings there.

Adding to her woes, Sania also dipped one place in the doubles ranking to be placed at 20th spot.

More bad news is in store for Indian tennis fans as Rohan Bopanna dropped eight slots to 252th, while Prakash Amritraj moved one place above to 268th.

Meanwhile, in the doubles ATP rankings, there were no major movements as both Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi held on to their last week's 21st and 16th positions respectively in individual rankings.

Interestingly, Rohan Bopanna, who finished second best partnering Aisam-ul Qureshi of Pakistan in Mumbai yesterday, fell one spot to 86th position.
