New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today greeted the people on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, asking them to rededicate themselves to the ideals of the Mahatma -- peace and non-violence.
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, the President said, ''Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.'' The life and work of Gandhiji was an inspiration for all to have tolerance and respect. He believed intolerance was a form of violence. ''It is significant that the United Nations has declared October 2 the International Day of Non-Violence.'' This year, as the nation celebrates the 60th anniversary of Independence, ''it is an appropriate opportunity for all of us to gratefully remember and pay homage to the Father of the Nation,'' Ms Patil said.
Tomorrow, the President would be the first signatory to the awareness campaign on the falling child sex ratio in the country and release the speciall commemorative medallions on the occasion of 60th year of Independence.
She will also inaugurate the 58th TB Seal Campaign of the Tuberculosis Association of India.
