Shillong, Oct 1 (UNI) Former Meghalaya Chief Minister F A Khonglam has been accused of corruption charges for misappropriating several lakhs of rupees through Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP).
The embezzlement of public funds came into light after Sohra People's Movement (SPM), an NGO, filed a Right to Information, seeking details on the implementation of the centrally-sponsored scheme in Dr Khonglam's Sohra Assembly constituency.
''Our MLA (Dr Khonglam) has misappropriated SRWP funds not less than Rs. 80 lakh,'' SPM leader Eligius Sawian alleged here today.
Mr Sawian said the amount was withdrawn during 2000-03 in the names of beneficiaries, but most didn't receive the financial assistant.
The allegations were directed more at Shella-Bholganj, Block Development Officer, Israel Ingti and another P Mawktieh. They were alleged to have withdrawn the central fund in the names of ''bogus beneficiaries'' after receiving ''authorisation certificate'' from the former Chief Minister.
Dr Khonglam, who is representing the Sohra Assembly constituency, for the three consecutive terms, is also facing corruption charge from the 11 traditional village heads.
The village heads have decided to jointly file an FIR seeking action against those involved in the ''scandal''.
However, the former Chief Minister rubbished the allegation and termed it as ''baseless and without truth'' adding the RTI was being ''misused'' by his political opponents.
