Chandigarh, Oct 1 (UNI) Haryana Governor A R Kidwai and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today urged people to follow the high ideals of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and said the State Government would announce a number of schemes for the welfare of the poor, specially the scheduled castes to mark the day.

In a message issued here today on the eve of birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Governor stressed that the ideals of non-violence, compassion and truth for which the Mahatma stood, were even more relevant today.

In a statement, the Chief Minister said that it has been decided to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti in a befitting manner by organising a State-level function on October 2 at village Ghasera in Mewat district and also by launching new welfare schemes on that day.

The State Government has decided to launch a scheme known as ''Financial Assistance to Gram Panchayats for Improved Sanitation and Employment Generation for Scheduled Castes'' on this day to improve their quality of life, especially in rural areas, Mr Hooda stated.
