Congress takes lead in urban local body polls

Bangalore, Sep 30 (UNI) In a swift move, Opposition Congress took lead, while Janata Dal (Secular) placed second in the Urban Local Bodies elections, even as the 'Power Transfer' issue between coalition partners JD(S) and BJP is looming large over Karnataka Official sources told UNI that Congress has taken lead by winning 1549 wards of the total over 4,800 wards, while JD (S), which had been in the lead earlier, has taken second place with 1400 win, while its coalition partner BJP remained in the third place with 1100.

The independents registered victory in over 600 wards.

While the BJP got majority in Bellary, Davanagere and Mangalore municipal corporations, the Congress emerged the single largest party in Gulbarga and Mysore.

Reacting to the outcome of the Urban Local Body elections, JD(S) Supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda said that, however, the outcome would not have any bearing on the Assembly or Lok Sabha elections. "It cannot be counted on Assembly and Lok Sabha', he added.

Welcoming the verdict given by the people in which one third of the total voters of the state participated, Mr Gowda said "everybody has to bow and respect before it'.

Thanking the voters, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said that the outcome has proved faith of the people on JD(S).
