Chennai, Oct 1: Lambasting his critics over the Ram Sethu issue, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi has alleged that certain ''communal forces'', anticipating early polls, were using the name of Lord Ram for reaping political mileage.
Speaking at a public meeting organised by the DMK-led DPA to highlight the importance of the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) here last night, he said the DPA would work against religious fanaticism.
''We will not rest till religious fanaticism, from wherever it originates, is defeated,'' he said, adding the need of the hour was communal harmony.
Alleging that the AIADMK was raking up the Ram Sethu issue to stall the SSCP, anticipating early elections, Mr Karunanidhi said that at the national level, the issue was being raised by some religious fundamentalists to spread communal hatred.
''I sympathise with Ram, who is being used by communal forces for political gains,'' he added.
Mr Karunanidhi said the name of Lord Ram was earlier used to demolish the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya and now was being used to stall the SSCP, the dream project of Tamils.
Toning down his rhetoric against Lord Ram, he reiterated that he had only been quoting what Valmiki had said in his epic Ramayana. There was no enmity between him and Lord Ram, he said, accusing a section of the media for portraying him as an enemy of the Lord.
The DMK patriarch, a leading light of the anti-Hindi movement in the 1960s, took everyone by surprise by singing a song in Hindi on communal harmony and nationalism.
