New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) Former champion Rushmi Chakravarthy waged a tough battle to overpower Delhi's Shalini Sahoo 7-6(7/3), 6-0 in the first round of the DSCL National Open tennis championship here today.
However in the men's section, another former champion Chennai lad Vinod Sridhar had little trouble in cruising into the second round outclassing Yannick Nelord 6-4, 6-3. Left-handed Vinod, who does not play much in the international circuit, used his court craft and backhand to good effect.
Meanwhile in the women's category, second seed Rushmi was in trouble in the first set where she did not get the timing of her shots right against the Delhiite. But experience, which Rushmi has in plenty, stood her in good stead in the second set as she whipped Shalini 6-0.
''First round matches are always a bit tough but I am happy I got into the groove later,'' Rushmi said after the match.
But there was cheer for the local camp Vishakha Sheoran who whipped Deepna Vazirani 6-0, 6-1 to enter the second round, while Parija Maloo prevailed over Deepanwita Chakraborty 6-1, 6-1.
The other notable winner in the women's section was Kelsi Sundaram, who was too good for Jilke Nelord pocketing the match 6-1, 6-1.
Bangalore's Arjun Goutham was on cruise control as he got past Manoj Kumar Sewa 6-1, 6-3.
The surprise, undoubtedly was Chandigarh based Tushar Liberhan's struggle against Vijayant Malik.
Tushar, who had competed in the qualifying at the Kingfisher Open, an ATP event in Mumbai last week needed a full three sets to pull the match off 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
