Tiruchirapalli, Sep 30 (UNI) A seven-day All India Open National Bridge tournament would be held at Surat in Gujarat from December 27 to January 4 next, according to N R Kirubakara Moorthy, Vice President of the Bridge Federation of India.
Talking to newspersons here today, Mr Moorthy, who is also the President of Tamil Nadu Bridge Association said the National Summer Bridge tournament would be held at Uthagamandalam in Tamil Nadu during the last week of January next, in which 26 teams from different states of the country, in addition to four Zonal teams were expected to participate in the event.
He said the selection trail for the Tamil Nadu team would held at Chennai shortly. The South Zone team for the Summer National had already qualified by winning the GKS trophy held at Madurai last month, he added.
He said efforts were on to popularise the game among the youngsters, especially for the school=going students and, for which, the Federation had proposed to conduct special coaching programmes for students all over the State.
He said Federation would start a coaching camp for the students in Chennai shortly. About 100 students of IIT Madras had shown tremendous interest in the game, as they were frequently playing the game among themselves.
Earlier speaking at the inaugural function of the 19th R S Krishna Memorial Open Contract Bridge tournament at BHEL here, Mr Moorthy pointed out that the State Association would conduct a coaching camp for Directors at Chennai shortly to overcome the shortage of Tournament Directors. Fifteen Directors were expected to attend the proposed coaching camp, he added.
The District Collector Ashish Vachani inaugurated the tournament.
