Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Sep 30 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has toned down his critical remarks against Lord Ram, which created a national furore even leading to a 'fatwa' being issued against him, by stating that he was not against the Hindu God.
''What enmity do I have with Lord Ram? His enemy has to be Ravana and not me,'' he said, inaugurating Periyar Maniammai University at Vallam, near here, yesterday.
Mellowing down his tough stand, Mr Karunanidhi said he was not against the Lord, but only against those who were trying to put spokes in the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) in his name.
Pitching hard for the SSCP, he said the 150-year-old dream project of the Tamils, when implemented, would ensure prosperity to the State, besides providing a shorter route to ships.
Mr Karunanidhi regretted that the BJP was up in arms against the project when only three to four months were left for the completion of the work, after the party-led NDA Government at the Centre had approved it.
He claimed that the forces opposing the project were doing so fearing that the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre and the DMK Government in the State would get a good name, ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections.
