Bathinda, Sep 30 (UNI) A 53-year old woman died while her husband and three daughters sustained grevious burn injuries after they tried to immolate themselves following a police raid at their residence in Mehma Jassa Singh village in the district last night.
The deceased was identified as Jasbir Kaur, while her husband Gurjant Singh, a dismissed policeman and their daughters Birpal Kaur (27), Beant Kaur (28) and Hardip Kaur (26) who suffered burn injuries were rushed to the Medical College at Faridkot, where their condition was described as serious.
Giving details of the incident SSP Naunihal Singh said today that Gurjant Singh and his daughter Birpal Kaur were wanted in an attempt to murder case registered against them two years back at the Talwandi Sabo police station. As Gurjant and his daughter were declared absconders by a judicial court, the police had gone to arrest them last night, he said.
The SSP claimed that when the police party reached Gurjant Singh's house, he poured kerosene on himself, his wife and three daughters. They then set themselves on fire and members of the raiding police party immediately rushed into the house and tried their best to extinguish the flames which had also engulfed a portion of the house he added.
Meanwhile Rampal Kaur, the only surviving daughter of Gurjant Singh in her complaint to the police alleged that her parents and sisters set themselves on fire as they were beaten and humiliated by the raiding police party. However the SSP refuted these allegations and claimed that the case against the dismissed cop was registered on the complaint of a farmer of the village with whom the family had a land dispute.
He claimed that there were as many as five FIR's pending against Gurjant Singh, who was dismissed from service a few years back.
